No one loves President Trump more than FCC Chairman Brendan Carr

We really need to cut out this poisonous plant at the root. Trump must be removed from office, by any peaceful means necessary. And every MAGA bootlicker who's working for him, Carr included, needs to be jailed and all their assets seized. No exceptions.

It's that, or possibly never see anything resembling democracy in the US going forward.

US government finds new excuse to stop construction of offshore wind

And people are supposed to trust a propaganda regime that provably and consistently lies? With operatives weaponizing fake reseaech while destroying real academic freedoms and NSF research centers?
I hope future administrations will investigate this is corruption, and if it is just punishing oligarch vs oligarch, they need to prosecute everyone that worked in this administration.

❄️ Current Events Monday Dec 15 thru Sunday Dec 28, 2025 Holidays Edition

All foreign made drones now banned in the US - so none of y'all will be able to buy a sweet DJI drone. And I will wager that even if you have one already, they might be forced to region lock you out of flying it maybe.

Edit - apparently existing stock can be bought so you should still be able to fly them .... Although I would be very nervous given region locking is a simple software thing and I wouldn't put that past this admin.

You great yet America?
Nice of them to wait until after Christmas. Just shows this has nothing to do with security.

The new perpetual 3D Printing Thread

We've discussed CAD a bit, but I would probably benefit from some comments on what are the design principles you apply in CAD files you want to share with others?

I honestly hit a bit of a wall after finding out about spreadsheets (variables in most CAD programs, I suspect, so I will use that term from here on out) and trying to adopt them. I just feel like a model I might want and want to share is not done until it's using variables and is sufficiently easy for someone to interpret they might actually use the CAD file to make changes rather than going back to the drawing board. (To be honest, I got in the doldrums for a bit, and have not been CAD'ing much lately.)

Here are the principles I am leaning to thus far.

(1) Use variables.
(2) No math in drawings/constraints. If math is needed, create a variable and put the math there.
(3) Initially create the part in a "natural" orientation that suits clear variable names. If you want the final result to be in a specific orientation for printing, reposition it as your final step. (Or at least as long as you reasonably can.)

That third principle has probably taken me too long to establish. I've long had a habit of modeling first based on my intended print orientation, but that creates a LOT of potential for confusion in interpreting variable names. If I lay something on its back, does "height" mean the Y axis (as it would be in its natural orientation) or the Z axis (the orientation in which I am modeling it)? Best to avoid that confusion.

Are there any other pearls of wisdom I should be considering?
I use CAD in my job. I rarely use variables and have never heard of variables called spreadsheets. Some parts benefit from using them, most don't. I use parametric CAD, Solidworks and Solid Edge. Naming features can be useful for future editing. What CAD system are you using?

Model things in the orientation they will be used in real life. They can rotated in the slicer if printing in a different orientation is required. Really it doesn't actually matter what orientation parts are modelled in. Modelling in a certain orientation just makes assemblies slightly easier as less re orientation is required.

Everything is gender

Without taking a stance on the threads premise I will say Al Gore doesn't seem like the best counter point as the prevailing cultural depiction of him may well be South Park's lisping "oh my god guys! I'm super cereal!!" when they mocked climate concern.

Yeah, Al Gore was absolutely feminized in a pejorative way in the 2000 election. He was painted as effete and wimpy compared to Bush’s manly man good ol’ boy cowboy type.

As for this thread as a whole….sure, gender is important politically. But so is race, religion, rural/urban, age, and plenty of other characteristics. People can’t be essentialized to one characteristic; that’s why intersectionality is such an important perspective.

Power outage paralyzes Waymo robotaxis when traffic lights go out

The proportion of human drivers who seem to either not be aware of the four-way-stop rule, or who don't understand how to handle four-way-stops in general, is uncomfortably high.
It would be interesting to see how this works in Australia, since we do not use four way stops. We have a defined give-way (yield) precedence at unsignaled intersections, or use roundabouts (traffic circles) where the rule is to give way to traffic already in the roundabout or on your right (which would be the left, for American road rules). The lack of four-way stop culture means the rules for nonfunctional traffic lights are less well understood. I’m not even sure what the letter of the law is. Perhaps I should look it up!

F1’s new engines are causing consternation over compression ratios

"Iron or titanium-based alloys" is a pretty broad category. For instance, Ti and its alloys have linear coefficients of expansion (×10−6 K−1) of

7.1–9.7 Beta and near beta titanium
8.4–8.6 Pure Titanium (Ti)
7.6–9.9 Unalloyed or low-alloy titanium
7.7–10 Alpha beta titanium
7.6–11 Alpha and near alpha titanium
16–24 Zinc copper titanium alloys

and some titanium alloys may have coefficients as high as 163.9
Doesn't titanium have relatively poor thermal conductivity? Might that risk overheating?

Ars Technica’s Top 20 video games of 2025

The only one on that list that I liked is DOOM: The Dark Ages, yet I wouldn't count it among my personal favourites. I didn't play a lot of games to begin with, but my personal favourites this year are Dispatch and The Alters.

I second Dispatch. Dispatch is a really fantastic game. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Part of what I disliked about F1 (the Brad Pitt movie) it was “oh wow Brad Pitt is the only person in the history of racing to go up to the edges of rules to get an advantage”. This happens all the time in every race series. Look up Smokey Yunick.
Or Smokey and the Bandit!

Everything is gender

There are some figures who do try to consciously bridge/use some of the masculine posture of conservatism to send a more moderating message. Tim Miller from the Bulwark comes to mind, although he is a gay man and isn't buff or oiled.
Scott Galloway is another. I don't always agree with him, but I think some of his thoughts on masculinity have merit.

TV Technica: Our favorite shows of 2025

For me the best shows this year were:
Andor S2
Peacemaker S2
Frieren
South Park S27

Only one I seem to share with Ars editors. Though I would have thought both Peacemaker and South Park would have been cultural touch stones with year.
I like Frieren but no new episodes were released this year, only in 2023 and 2024. New episodes soon though!

Everything is gender

"little girl" is about as opposite as "big buff masculine man" as it gets. I know she's older now, but she became mainstream when she was a kid.
She's not a little girl, though. That's your label that you're apparently permanent affixing to her. I think you should discard the example or at least explain masculinity beyond big buff masculine man.

I must ask though (just for me): does oiling the big buff masculine man increase or decrease masculinity?

I was saying that being feminine isn't the same as being a woman, not that those 2 things are excluded.
Oh, I have a sinking feeling the further this thread goes the more inextricably linked those two will start to become.

People talk about the nature of masculinity all of the time in regards to politics. I don't think it's ignored at all. I don't think "everything is gender" either.

I think the conservatives in America need a specific brand of masculinity as a part of their identity politics but their self-proclaimed ownership of masculinity (whatever that is defined as) is just that: self-proclaimed.

There are some figures who do try to consciously bridge/use some of the masculine posture of conservatism to send a more moderating message. Tim Miller from the Bulwark comes to mind, although he is a gay man and isn't buff or oiled.

SPEED Act passes in House despite changes that threaten clean power projects

Money people have also realised that realistically we've probably got less that a decade left of even a marginally functional society and environment, at least by western standards. We've blown through all the tipping points and now its just rats on a sinking ship - hoard wealth and resources and be one of the 0.0001% who can buy their way out of total ecosystem collapse, at least for a few years, and fuck everyone else.
Even if the money people do see what we likely have in store for us, their complete lack of vision and morality have caused them to act in the most cowardly way possible. I wish them the very worst.

Or, you know, someone may have a different opinion than you about that game.
Did you actually even read what you quoted? I specifically listed that someone can have a different opinion on something.

Doesn't mean it's smart to recommend it is all, especially in this slightly more professional format.

Being Santa Claus is a year-round calling

I understand the pressure these people are under. I have committed to maintaining my Easter Bunny character 24/7, 365 days a year.
It's tough. Even Santa will snap someday.

Ars Technica’s Top 20 video games of 2025

Doom: The Dark Ages was the game I enjoyed the most that I was expecting to not enjoy. If that makes sense.

I mean yes, I could have done without the mech-and-dragon bits, and true I couldn't tell who the 'good' guys were (assuming there were any) but overall pretty solid title.

Regarding Ars compliance with new U.K. law

While your post focuses on ARS and U.K. compliance, it’s worth noting that accurate property data is equally vital for legal and tax adherence locally. For reliable access to ownership details, valuation history, and exemption tools, visit the pascocountypropertyappraiser.org This resource ensures residents and professionals alike can stay compliant with state regulations and informed about property-related matters.

Trump claims, with no evidence, that Google is “rigged” against him

I consider this the definitive rendition.
Alas my still crap Internet connection isn't up to watching videos. I'm barely able to search for MLP images most of the time. Which might help explain why the number of ponies in the images isn't matching the number of the day. Maybe next year when quantum computing is a solved thing, that can help with my maths.
