I expect to be down voted for this but I do not have any faith that Christopher Nolan is capable as making this as gay/queer as it should be.

I love his Batman trilogy, but I am beyond skeptical he can treat the Odyssey as anything other than Oscar-bait 300.
Of course it won't be as queer as it should be, just look at the costuming! We didn't invent color as a species until 1861, after all.

I'm actually looking forward more to Roel Konijnendijk's teardown of this than to the actual film.

I hope one day to see an adaptation of the Homeric Epics that uses Mycenean rather than Classical Greek aesthetics (after all, even Herodotus considered Troy to be in the distant past). For example, the warriors should be wearing Dendra armor rather than the stereotypical hoplite kit. And all the weapons should be painted yellow (because they're made of bronze).

I'm hoping the sound editing is good. Tenet drove me nuts in that regard, but Oppenheimer was well done.

The dialogue levels in Tenet drive me nuts. I really like that move, and think it's severely underrated due to the fucked up politics with it's theatrical release and the awful audio. You can't watch it without subtitles, which kind of kills the theatrical experience (which is also pretty funny in retrospect).

I'll go see this in a theater. I love the story, and the casting is interesting. My only worries are over-use of CGI (likely) and not being able to forget that Matt Damon is Matt Damon (TBD).
Watching Odysseus take down Polyphemus with a rolled-up magazine and a biro should be entertaining.

Yeah I've seen it 3 times and love it for its originality. But hearing no dialogue at times when the actors are clearly speaking was maddening in the theater. I can't believe that wasn't fixed in post with such a large budget.

I read the Iliad and the Odyssey when I was 8 years old. I look forward to this as I would any adaptation of a text that formative to me. I hoovered up Greek and Norse myths as a kid, and although as mentioned above, I'd love to see a true Mycenaean era costuming, I just hope the production is top notch and the human drama is well done. It was in Oppenheimer and my other Nolan favorite, The Prestige.

I recently reread the Odyssey (Fitzgerald translation), and the climactic scene (slaughter of the suitors) was appropriately epic. And then (if you don't remember) the faithless maidservants (who had been sleeping with the suitors) were forced by Odysseus to come out and clean up the gore before they were executed.

It will be interesting to see how they handle this in the movie.

Every time I see a Hollywood production of my own cultural heritage I feel like vomiting.

Except The Odyssey is also part of America's cultural heritage. You might recall that the US was founded by European immigrants, and most of those immigrants lived in countries that were part of the Roman Empire. And the Roman Empire inherited much of Greek culture.

John Adams probably read The Odyssey in the original Greek.

Many people read The Odyssey in high school here.

While I am sure it will be imperfect*, hopefully it is still a good introduction for the 90+% of the population that has never read the story. And a good time.

*
1) it should have ATMOS, but likely won't ;).
2) while Nolan cheated a lot of the physics of black holes in Interstellar (e.g. ignoring fuel and thrust realities, that no planet could have life in an environment with that much radiation, etc.) I give him a lot of credit for getting the visuals around Gargantua correct and using time dilation as a plot device. Plus the soundtrack was spot on.

I would settle for actual classical Greek aesthetics, rather than the marvel cinematic universe aesthetics that they seem to be going for.

E.g., what the hell is that helmet the guy in black is wearing? Even Odysseus's helmet looks chosen for style over substance. Also, in the earlier preview they released, when the ship was going into the Charybdis whirlpool, it looked like it was square rigged like sailing ships from the 1400-1800s.

Although, by far, the worst problem is likely to be the implausibility of plot and not any of the specifics of the arms and armor. If I were to see this movie, it probably just piss me off.

Edit: I should've been more specific about the implausibility. I have another comment down-thread where I attempt to explain what I mean. It's nothing to do with the fairytale, but rather believing that the characters would react the same way a real person would if they were living in that fairytale.

I get that this is accurate, but I seriously doubt average audiences would go for this. However, the black armor in the screen grab also looks like it came from a 90s body shop. WTF happened to costumes design in Hollywood?

This may be true for all of us older folks. Apparently even reading an entire book of any sort is becoming rare in public high schools these days.
It's my generation and yours the ones who are educating public high school kids. If you wanted to say "What a terrible shame and embarrassment, what a disservice we're doing to these poor kids" you could have written that, it wasn't hard.
