CBS cannot contain the online spread of a “60 Minutes” segment that its editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, tried to block from airing.
This anecdote about her "reporting" says it all

Figured it wouldn't take long for misinformation/disinformation/trolls to hit the platform. But you think they could do better than a 30 year old quote. You'd think they would have refined their Whataboutism skills more in the last 10 years.
It's a reference to the heyday of Limewire when users would rename the video clip as some popular recent movie release to trick people into downloading it. A classic, along with "Linkin_Park_Numb.mp3.exe"

CBS correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who anchored the segment, noted that the Trump administration had repeatedly declined to comment as the story came together. By delaying the segment solely because of Trump officials’ silence, Weiss appeared to be giving the Trump administration a “kill switch” to block any story they don’t want aired, Alfonsi suggested.
Yeah...I made the mistake of working in Journalism out of college for a few years about 15 years ago before pivoting to my current line of work. Admittedly worked for at best small-to-medium sized markets in the Pacific Northwest, but 'declining to comment' was not even in the realm of possible reasons to withhold a story.

Alfonsi - and by extension the greater public's - take on this being a chilling effect is 100% spot on. There's a word for "reporting" only what folks want to go on record to say; it's called Public Relations, not Journalism.

I stay in touch with one of my old Journalism professors, who made a pre-education career out of working at pulitzer-prize winning organizations and breaking some truly huge stories in his time. His response to me sending this to him is two words, and sums it up succinctly: "it's fucked"

“Risked” lol. I think CBS screamed right past “risked.”

A right wing blogger gets her first taste of power and immediately bootlicks. Totally fits in this cursed timeline
Money well spent by David Ellison. Looking around, Republicans are doing a good job taking out dissenting voices in the media, may it be CBS News, the LA Times, the Washington Post, or PBS/NPR. Trump lies as he breathes and only a few remaining major news orgs in the US are left pushing back.

Larry Ellison owns Paramount, which owns CBS. Larry Ellison wants to own WB now as well. This is about appeasing the Trump administration to get regulatory approval for the purchase. We can expect more of this as we continue our slide into authoritarianism.

Please support independent news. NPR, PBS, The Guardian, AP, ProPublica, etc. Its really all we have left.

CBS has spent the year punching itself in the dick. Hiring Weiss is just one of those many punches.

On a side note. I didn’t know anything about this segment until I heard it was being pulled. Then I actively sought it out and watched it. They should have just let it air. Pulling it made CBS and the Trump admin look worse than they are already perceived.

Effectively yes, but actually his son David owns Paramount.

Be cautious about Limewire, it's not the same P2P pirate subversive thing that we all used, along with eDonkey, audiogalaxy, etc, and it's certainly not using torrents. New ownership might have resurrected the name, but they bought out some popular device-to-device file sharing websites like Snapdrop and Sharedrop, which used RTSP to share files within the LAN cross-platform and without the need of apps except any browser, and surreptitiously changed them to upload to Limewire's cloud instead. They're even blocked now by uBlock Origin as "badware risks". Pairdrop.net is an alternative that still works.

If you want to view the video, better go to the other links in that reddit thread in the article, like on the web archive (and while you're there, maybe donate if you can):

I reiterate: Nazi Germany circa early 1930's. If you throw up a timeline of German Workers' Party to the Nazi party and all the activities they did when they took power in the early 1930's the number of pins you can place on that timeline that match the Trum.....I mean Republican party should make you want to vomit.

Barbra Streisand is a superb, among — if not — the best singer of her generation, and yet might be remembered more for a mediatisation effect than her musical prowess.
I watched 60 minutes religiously several decades ago but haven’t bothered at all lately because of CBS’ rightward shift, but I’ve already seen the censored segment. I guess from now on I’ll start watching only the censored stories.

I’d love a story about how (and who) let this air on Canadian TV. I’m sure there’s more to the story.
